New Artworx use both digital and conventional offset printing technologies. Each technology has their pro’s and con’s and the choice of which technology to employ is dictated by the required quality of the final product, the budget and the turnaround time. We select the optimal printing technology for each project.
Offset printing involves the application of ink to paper via a series of rollers. Each roller has its own ink, cyan, magenta, yellow or black (CMYK). Each roller passes over a page and transfers the ink, building up complete image or text. Specialised colours called Pantone colours (PMS) and metallic inks can also be added as well as clear varnishes.
Offset Printing Pros
Cost Effective for Larger Runs. A print quantity of over 500 units is typically well suited for offset printing. For example corporate brochures, annual reports
Specialized Colors & Techniques. Offset presses can print PMS colors and utilize gloss/matte varnishes for added texture. Additionally, multiple press “heads” allow for an infinite array of colors and printing techniques.
High quality finish
Large choice of paper and board types.
Offset Printing Cons
Costly and time consuming, setup & printing plates
Higher print costs for short print runs.
Increased turn around time.
Cost prohibitive to make last minute art work changes once printing has commenced
Digital printing employs a laser or inkjest technology and applies the dry toner or ink in a single pass. A file is sent from a computer to press, which is immediately transfered onto paper. It eliminates steps such as creating films and/or plates which are required in offset printing. Digital print is exceptionally fast, making it ideal for projects with tight deadlines.
Digital Printing Pros
More economical for small print runs.
The digital medium allows for quick and last minute editing of the artwork.
The printing process is much quicker to initiate.
Ability to print variable data as part of the one printing process
It can quickly print off proof sheets, a few sheets at a time.
Digital Printing Cons
Digital is more expensive than offset when printing a large numbers of sheets.
Most digital presses cannot print spot pantone colour and metallic inks.
Although the quality is good it is slightly inferior to the results achieved with offset printing.
